Investigation of Drag Coefficient at Subcritical and Critical Reynolds Number Region for Circular Cylinder with Helical Grooves
Drag reduction of an object is the major concern in many engineering applications. Experimental studies have been carried out on circular cylinder with helical grooves in a subsonic wind tunnel. Different cases of helical grooves with different pitches, helical groove angles and number of starts of helical groove on circular cylinder are tested. Experimental results show the drag coefficient is...
متن کاملTerminal velocity and drag reduction measurements on superhydrophobic spheres
Super water-repellent surfaces occur naturally on plants and aquatic insects and are created in the laboratory by combining micro or nano-scale surface topographic features with hydrophobic surface chemistry. When such types of water-repellent surfaces are submerged they can retain a film of air (a plastron). In this work, we report measurements of the terminal velocity of solid acrylic spheres...
متن کاملMeasuring drag without a force transducer: a terminal velocity assay
1. Organisms live surrounded by air or water, which exert drag on an organism when moving. These forces are significant ecologically because they can affect organisms’ distribution, behaviour or dispersal. 2. Appropriate techniques for measuring or estimating these forces vary greatly depending on the magnitude of the forces and the flow pattern of the moving fluid (air or water; both gases and...
متن کاملthe effect of lexical inferencing and concept mapping on the vocabulary retention among iranian intermediate efl learners
this study was an attempt to investigate and compare the effect of lexical inferencing and concept mapping on developing vocabulary retention of iranian language learners. sixty homogeneous students from different intact classes who were being taught as intermediate learners in sokhan english institute participated in this study. they were in different classes. a teacher made test as a pre-test...
Comparison of formulas for drag coefficient and settling velocity of spherical particles
Two formulas are proposed for explicitly evaluating drag coefficient and settling velocity of spherical particles, respectively, in the entire subcritical region. Comparisons with fourteen previously-developed formulas show that the present study gives the best representation of a complete set of historical data reported in the literature for Reynolds numbers up to 2×10.
